  Travis Kalanick:

  Travis Kalanick:

  Question:

Would you like to talk about the relationship between technology and development in your business?

  Travis Kalanick:

Look, I think we are at an interesting place I think when it comes to internet technology because we are at the forefront of what is refereed as in China as O to O (Offline to Online, or Online to Offline), and the economic development story becomes really really obvious and really straightforward for us. Our first cultural value is what we call celebrate the city. What does that mean for us? That starts with everything we do in a city is about making the city better, and our world is about transportation. So you can get from Point A to Point B by just pressing a button. And it’s that simple premise that means, well, “I no longer have to have a car, and by doing this, I can have one car that’s shared across 20-30 people in a day”, and now you’ve got reduced congestion which is of course giving a lot of time back to people, you have reduced pollution, but most importantly you have a massive increase in jobs, and creating jobs directly in the cities that we serve. And so we’re today creating hundreds of thousands of jobs a month around the world, and that’s pretty quickly going to get into the millions, and it’s because again we have a new model for how to get around cities. So our city teams that sort of operate the businesses, they are sort of the sons and daughters of those cities, they are incredibly proud of the benefit and the things that they’re doing for the city, and the economic development just a very crystal clear part of the purpose and meaning of Uber.

Question: Travis, and also my other colleagues, because one of the areas you hear criticism bout technology, even about economic growth models, is the impact that it has on widening the gap between rich and poor, inequality, a number of you have addressed unemployment issues, small business the impact on small business, the impact on women, some of these issues are ones that are leveled at economic growth models. I think these are the kinds of things that are lobbed at technology entrepreneurs all the time.

  Travis Kalanick:

Of course every business is different, and so I can’t speak for all of them, but for us its super straightforward. Rich people already have cars shuttling them around all the time, okay, so the Uber product is not for rich people. The Uber product in many cities, in most cities, is close to half the price of a taxi. The Uber product is creating jobs for those who are underemployed or unemployed, so this is a super straightforward thing for us. We’ve made a commitment that by the year 2020, creating a million new jobs for women directly as drivers. We can do that because of the safety that we bring to the platform. We have something like 20-25 times the percentage of women driving on our system vs. the taxi system. And then of course the access of transportation, being a transportation alternative in cities means that 40% of our trips are going to places that were underserved by transportation alternatives that exist in a city, and so now people who couldn’t get around now can, when they need to and they can do it at haft the price of a taxi. So in so many ways our business is actually focused on lower middle class or even lower class in helping to bring that up. And so it goes back to what I was saying earlier, just obviously very excited about the work we are doing.
